Less stress travel: Surviving the family

By: Lauren Johnson /The Daily Cardinal  - November 14, 2007

It’s Dec. 24. Dinner is at 8:00 p.m. followed by clean up. The whole family sits down to “talk.” The result is numerous intense debates regarding college, the presidential elections, health care, or anything else that leads to family argument.

Early morning Dec. 25. You’re getting called downstairs to watch the younger siblings open gifts—just 10 more minutes of sleep—PLEASE! The day ends with multiple rounds of Scene-It, instead of watching Kobe play in the Lakers traditional Christmas-night game, which is much more appealing.

Sound familiar to anyone? Winter break is supposed to be stress free, so this winter break make sure to take the right measures to get the rest and relaxation you deserve.

For starters, bring home a good book. Something you always wanted to read but could not because of the mandatory textbook readings. “Any Jodi Picoult book, My Sisters Keeper, is a great read,” Madison resident Christine Jersild said.

Guys can try any thriller from the bestseller rack. Some quiet time with this book is sure to offer some relaxation, while providing an element of entertainment.

Also check the local theater for new movies. Grab a friend or family member and indulge in popcorn and a large Coke. Sit back, relax and enjoy.

Another must-do over the holiday break is to reconnect with long-distance friends. Make plans for dinner and a drink. Chat about the “old days” and plans for the future. Some good laughs and interesting conversation are sure to follow.

If money is not a deterrent, try a long weekend getaway like Steamboat Springs, Colo. Music Fest is a ski trip for college students to get away and enjoy their winter vacations. Music Fest has more than 50 performers to make the week more enjoyable for the 4,500 anticipated students who attend.

“Prices range from $199 up to $1400 if you want to stay in a luxurious penthouse. Price is per person and includes five nights lodging, four full day life passes for world class skiing in Steamboat,” said John Dickson, owner of Dickson Productions.

Winter break is only five weeks away, spend the time needed to relax and enjoy before heading back to school. Read a book, see a movie, take a trip, do whatever is needed to make sure the vacation is stress-free.

However, if nothing will help the anxiety caused by family members, you can always take the advice of University of Wisconsin student Alec Woodruff, and “just not go home.”
