UW to host open comment forum for drafted segregated fee policy

By: Amanda Hoffstrom /The Daily Cardinal  - November 15, 2007

UW-Madison’s Offices of the Dean of Students announced Wednesday it would host a public comment forum on Monday, Nov. 26 to discuss proposed policy changes that govern student segregated university fee distribution to student organizations.

Associate Dean of Students Kevin Helmkamp said the listening session, which will be open to the entire campus community, would provide an opportunity for students to offer their input on the UW system-wide policy.

The UW System Committee to Review Allocable Segregated Fee Policies has been working since August to draft a revised policy of segregated fee use as commissioned by UW System Board of Regents President Mark Bradley.

Helmkamp said the three major points of contention among the committee members include state oversight of segregated fee dollars, the ability of registered student organizations to lease off-campus space in significant circumstances and the ability of organizations to hire non-university employees through the use of student fees.

“If students have opinions regarding those areas of disagreement, this would be a good forum to pass that on,” he said.

Dean of Students Lori Berquam, Associate Dean Argyle Wade, Assistant Dean Drew Wielgus and Alex Gallagher, chair of the Associated Students of Madison’s Student Services Finance Committee, will join Helmkamp at the session.

Students in attendance will be able to sign up to make comments and ODOS has asked students share their name, year in school and student organization affiliation. Each speaker will have a three-minute time limit.

The session will be held from 6-8 p.m. at 1111 Humanities building.

All comments will be provided to the UW system committee at its next meeting Nov. 27, before a final recommendation is passed on to the Regents at its Dec. 6-7 meeting.
