Police share new detail in murder case

By: The Daily Cardinal /The Daily Cardinal  - February 4, 2008

The Madison Police Department released new information Friday about a “person of interest” related to the killing of 31-year-old Joel Marino Jan. 28.

A police report described the person of interest as being a white male with a thin build.

Police did not initially release the person’s race due to inconsistent reports from witnesses, according to MPD Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain.

The person is believed to be about six feet tall and was last seen wearing a white knit cap with a “W” insignia on the front and a sheepskin-like coat. He was also carrying a grayish blue new-looking backpack.

An anonymous donor contributed $30,000 Thursday to a reward fund set up for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the murder.

Funeral services for Marino were held Saturday. Police said Marino was found in an alley on South Park Street with stab wounds to his side. He was then transported to UW Hospital where he died.
