A Madison firefighter brings chemical cleanup supplies back to the fire engine.

A large acid spill occurred Friday in the Engineering Research Building on Campus, forcing the builidng to be evacuated by the Madison Fire Department.

On the 12 floor of the building the spill occurred around 3:48 p.m., with no one injured. The building is located at the corner of Universty St. and N. Breese. Terr., 1550 Engineering Dr.

People inside the building also heard a large “pop” sound around the same time as the spill from inside the building, though it is uncertain if the two are connected, according to Fire Deparment spokesperson Bernadette Galvez.

“This is a good thing we got everybody out on time,” she said.

The spill also produced a yellow haze on the 12 floor, according to Galvez.

Galvez said it was unclear when the building would be completely cleaned.
