UW-Madison chancellor candidate Timothy Mulcahy

Timothy Mulcahy, vice president for research at the University of Minnesota, has withdrawn his name as a finalist to replace Chancellor John Wiley in September.

Mulcahy said in a statement he was “deeply honored” to be chosen as a finalist for the UW-Madison chancellor position, but withdrew himself from consideration May 22.

“In the end, my personal desire to enjoy quality time with my wife, children, and grandchildren, combined with my professional interest in advancing a wide range of initiatives I have started at the University of Minnesota, led me to this decision,” he said.

The special UW System Board of Regents committee, which will make a final recommendation to UW System President Kevin Reilly, met to discuss the finalists the day before Mulcahy informed them of his decision.

“I want to express my appreciation to the members of the search committee and the Regents selection committee for providing me with this great opportunity. Ultimately, I want what is best for UW-Madison and I am confident that the search process will result in the selection of a great candidate for the position of chancellor.”

The remaining finalists include UW-Madison College of Letters & Sciences Dean Gary Sandefur, Cornell University Provost Biddy Martin and Rebecca Blank, former dean of University of Michigan’s school of public policy.
